Siem Reap Tourist Information

Safety

Siem Reap is a relatively safe town and most visitors will pass through without incident. Like any other town around the world, there are some crimes. Most crimes targeted towards tourists are often petty and non-violent.

Always keep your wits about you and your personal belongings secure. There are people everywhere and it’s easy to grab a wallet which is hanging out of your back pocket.

Don’t give money or buy milk for beggars and street children around the Pub Street area. In most cases, tourists will be duped out of their hard-earned money. If you want to help, we can suggest some great organisations which you can visit or leave a donation.

If you try to be street-wise, you’ll generally have no problems in Siem Reap. However, tourists are an easy target and women with bags are often targeted for drive-by bag snatchings. Only take what you need with you and keep most of your valuable belongings in your hotel safe.

Money

Cambodian operates a dual-currency society with Khmer Riel and US Dollars accepted everywhere. Only notes are accepted and coins are not used at all. Old or torn notes are not accepted, and higher denominations are checked everywhere. You should also check your change and not accept any notes which are old or torn.

There are ATMs dotted all over Siem Reap and even in the smaller provincial towns. Most will dispense USD or Khmer Riel and may charge for using them.

Credit cards are widely accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops in Siem Reap but are not often used outside of the town. Therefore, if you’re going outside of Siem Reap, it would be best to carry cash with you.

There are many places to exchange currency in Siem Reap. Many shops, hotels, and restaurants will accept various currencies but give you change in USD or KHR. Money changers and banks are other places where you can exchange money. It’s often good to shop around as there are various rates on offer.

Siem Reap Pub Street

Pub Street is one of the most popular areas in Siem Reap for tourists.

Weather

The climate in Siem Reap is tropical with two main seasons, the wet and the dry season. During the wet season, Cambodian is transformed into a stunning green landscape with rice farms as far as the eye can see. The rainy season is the hottest time of year but is also the low season. You can often find better deals and get cheaper prices in the low season.

The dry season runs from around November to March and is the peak season in Siem Reap. The days are cooler, but can still reach the high 20s. It’s often more pleasant to explore the temples during this season as it’s not so hot.

Getting Around

There are many options for getting around Siem Reap town. There are literally tuk tuks on every street corner which will take you anywhere where you want to go around town. Tuk tuks are also a popular method for getting around the temples.

There are also bicycles available for rent. You can rent a simple bicycle or a mountain bike and explore the town and temples.

Taxis are not so common, but they are available. There are private taxis without a meter where you can discuss the price with the driver. For shorter trips, there are metered taxis available.

If you want to go to other towns and cities such as Phnom Penh, Battambang, Sihanoukville, or Kampot, there are regular buses available.
